Frequently Asked Questions about Log Cabins

1.  How can I be sure that I am purchasing a log cabin not a glorified garden shed?

A true log cabin will be build by interlocking one log over the other to create the walls both inside and out.  Logs come in various thickness but at Cabinco we only supply logs of 68mm and above.  The larger the building the heavier the log is likely to be.  If the building is intended for all year round use then additional insulation (in our machine profiled cabins) is likely to be required by Building Regulations.  This is hidden in a cavity in much the same way as traditional construction which is created by adding an outer skin to match the wall log.  See;  wall section.htm.  A Cabinco log cabin with wall insulation is likely to measure at least 170mm in thickness. (68mm inner log, 60mm insulation 22mm external skin + gap).  Many so called "log cabins" will have main logs of 28mm and below - this is where the confusion between cabins and sheds occurs.

2.  How long will my log cabin last?

Like all things, how well the cabin is cared for will influence this.  We estimate that any of our cabins built with 68mm logs and above will have a lifespan in excess of 60 years, however, many continue indefinitely as this photo demonstrates.

3.    Is it environmentally responsible to cut down trees for cabins?

Cabinco are very environmentally aware and only source timbers from well managed forests.  This means that more trees are planted than cut down.  Young trees consume more carbon dioxide and release more oxygen into the environment so this practise is actually beneficial to the environment.  In addition to this there are no heavy industrial plants giving off greenhouse gases to manufacture this Natural Resource.  Chain of custody/FSC certification is available where required and recycled insulation materials can be used if preferred.  Log cabins can play a vital role allowing you to have a Green Building.

4.    Will my cabin be warm?

Log cabins are extremely warm.  Many of our clients are surprised by how little heating they actually require as the natural thermal qualities of the timber ensure up to 15% more energy efficiency that timber framed or masonry buildings.  The logs absorb heat to keep buildings cool and release this heat slowly when the temperature drops minimising any sharp temperature changes.  Warm in winter and cool in summer.

5.      Surely this style of building is going to be expensive?

Log cabins are extremely economical.  The low cost of logs and round timber compared with other structural materials and the fast build time reduces the labour element also.  Provided you select a proper cabin with substantial logs, the long life of the building will ensure that you have selected an economically sound construction method.

6.    What if I want a building different to the ones shown on your website.

Cabinco specialise is building log cabins specific to the individual requirements.  If you tell us what you require, we will design a building to meet your requirements.  We have even built cabins to go around a tree, so if it is structurally possible, Cabinco will help you build it.
